Christian Reflections, C.S. Lewis

Why is a subjectivism about values incompatible with democracy?

The very idea of freedom presupposes some objective moral law which overarches rulers and ruled alike. Subjectivism about values is eternally incompatible with democracy. We and our rulers are of one kind only so long as we are subject to one law. But if there is no law of nature, the ethos of any society is the creation of its rulers, educators and conditioners; and every creator stands above and outside his own creation.

  1. Well, hello. I don't know what exactly this blog is for - it looks like the blog of a professor!
But I got here because I clicked on your name in one of the threads over at the First Things blog.

Unfortunately many of my comments - perhaps all - not sure - are now being censored by FT.

Anyways, that's why you won't see me interacting there as I was doing - it's not a choice. These people have such a need for censorship, it's truly mind-boggling.

Keep up the good work, though. I saw that it was awhile ago that you posted here. I hope that you get this message.

    Best regards,
    Heather

    1. Hi Heather,

I clicked on your user name and followed the links to your blog. I left a comment there as well for how we could proceed on the First Things discussion board I mentioned to you. Who knows if we can figure out a way to get in touch with the folks we want to post on the board, but it's worth a shot.
